My Life, My Path, My Culture, My Journey
I come from love, I come from struggle, and every emotion in between,
I come from my parents finding peace in having a fourth child in the scene.
I come from the skies, the heavens above, the greater power over me,
I am created with a purpose that I must learn, and the world that will see.
I am black, but I am light, spirits shine through my skin and me,
I am passion, I am fight, for my brothers and sisters to be free.
I am a brown sugar baby, sweet, but oh so ready for the contention,
A young woman with determination to be seen of her layers of dimension.
I live by “Let Go and let God” and “Everything happens for a reason,”
That we are all souls of insight, teaching the next what to sink in.
We are all equal humans and to me that makes sense,
But for some reason even as one species, we don’t see through the same lense.
I wish one would’ve told me that we all don’t think alike,
That our emotions will vary as we’ve all had our own fight.
To understand that our cultures and environments, history shape us all,
And a world without empathy will be our downfall.
I wish one would’ve told me that not everyone will embrace my struggle,
That Jim Crow still exists but through incarceration and false smuggle.
But then there’s Holocausts, Trails of Tears, and walls of division up for debate,
And even one race being looked at and put to blame for our quarantine state.
Maybe it’s not about full embrace, maybe it’s the sense of recognition,
That we all have roots and lineage that led us to our current position.
But these roots and branches shouldn’t make us divide,
We must learn that we are one tree, so we can see through our neighbor’s eye.
A world with togetherness, less separation, split and hate,
A world where straight can be curvy and there’s less to discriminate.
Acceptance is the key, the savior, the light,
Where the world won’t care if her skin is black or white.
Life taught me that our cultures are beautiful, our different forms and different shapes,
But we are also one culture, and that is simply the human race.
There’ s power in understanding how our cultures will allow us to unite,
Learning each other’s history can show why we act, love, and even why we fight.
I fight for love, I fight for struggle, I fight for every emotion in between,
I fight for my parents, my family, and every human around me.
I lead from the skies, the heavens above, the greater power over me,
I fight for a better world, a better generation, and more love for you and me.
